The Oxford and Cambridge Goat Race 2009

March 12th, 2009 · 2 Comments · london, nature, portfolio

On the same day as a similar sounding event, Sunday the 29th March 2009, we will race two actual goats along a difficult, meandering course lined with cheering spectators.

It’s a charity event from Anne, Simeon, me (and Cookie and Nicky) to help raise money for Spitalfields City Farm, situated just behind Brick Lane.

So come down, browse Brick Lane market, cheer on the goats, and then we’ll all go to a nearby pub or bar for a free (or at least very cheap – I am negotiating with some places now) drink.

obligatory snow pictures from London

February 3rd, 2009 · No Comments · domestic life, london

IMG_1420

Some things that I learned over this snowy period:

1. When it snows at night, it’s an eerie bright orange. The streetlights of London bounce off the snow in the air to light up the whole sky with a diffuse orange glow. Neat.

2. Dogs do not automatically know they are meant to pull stuff, and do not automatically enjoy it. Nor do they automatically know what ‘mush’ or ‘hike’ mean.

3. The experience of skiing in Greenwich Park is oddly similar to normal skiing in a resort. You
have trudging along roads, car parks, and trails. Highly recommended.

New Year’s Resolution – cooking only scratchbuilt stuff

December 31st, 2008 · 1 Comment · london, thoughts

I haven’t had a microwave for a couple of years now. Our last one broke and I made a point of not getting a new one. I wasn’t sure what the point was exactly, but I really enjoy not having one now.

One thing I really missed was microwave popcorn, so a couple of months ago, someone showed me to make popcorn from scratch for the first time since kindergarten. I’m now really obsessed with it and eat it all the time (3+ times per week), to the point where I can make it consistently, quickly and easily.

The point of all this is that the other day I ate microwave popcorn again for the first time in months. Without meaning to be snobbish, it’s very, very bad in comparison to pot+fire+oil+heat+butter popcorn. It’s on the same level of difference as a microwave burger (e.g. Rustlers) to any kind of real burger. So I tried to give the unwanted microwave popcorn to Dog, but he turned his nose up at it, at which point I realised that (a) that’s the first microwaved thing he’s ever been given and (b) that it must be really, really, bad.

There is also the point that microwave popcorn is 3-4 times more expensive than real popcorn, even after you factor in the butter costs.

I’ve also recently been inspired by Tristan’s homemade drinks and syrups, which I’ve been trying out, and seeing that often, the only difference between store bought and home made is a load of industrial processing and flavouring.

So my resolution is:
For cooking food at home, I will only use scratch-built ingredients. This applies to anything used in the quantity of more than a few dashes.

For example, I will only use scratch-built ketchup and mayo, but I am not going to ferment my own soy sauce or balsamic vinegar. It does not apply to drinks, and I also exempt bread, as I love crusty white bread and refuse to entertain the thought of frequently running out of it.

If I eat out or take out, it’s anything goes.

This shouldn’t be too hard, since I usually cook very simple stuff, and don’t even cook very often, perhaps 3-5 times a week. It also gives me an excuse to make more stuff, which over winter, tends to be spent more in the house and kitchen rather than shed or park.

Things I commonly use/eat in my kitchen that now need to be scratchbuilt or scrapped:
Frosties, Paté, Coleslaw, Jam, Walls Vienetta (joke), fish fingers (F*#K!!).

So there we go. I’ll keep updating on new things that I make from scratch, stuff that turns out very tough, or more things that I exempt myself from.

I also have other resolutions like cut my hair, stop spooning the dog, get some proper adult clothes, and stop being a wastrel, but those are all boring.

why I love England

April 28th, 2008 · 2 Comments · london

I have just come back from 3 months on holiday, and was feeling pretty down about being back in the UK. But these 2 things reminded me why I love England.

This is Woolacombe Bay, North Devon. I’d never been before, and it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen in my life, 3 hours drive from our house. I say this having been on beaches in Brasil for a good few months.

This video clip reminds me so much of my school and youth in North London, and is irrefutable evidence for how immigration really does enrich culture.

new bike – fixed gear road cruiser

November 19th, 2007 · 1 Comment · london, portfolio

One of the reasons I haven’t been blogging a lot is that I’ve been building a new bike, bit-by-bit. It’s an alloy beach cruiser frame, with just about everything else new on it.

my-bike

My old singlespeed bike, (The DR06, 2004-2007, RIP) got nicked, and I wanted to build a fixed gear bike. But the whole vintage road track frame things wasn’t for me, so I decided to get a cheap US cruiser frame and make it into a usable every day commuter.

It looks “different” in the same way teachers in school told me my paintings were “different”, and I like the way it rolls around. Riding brakeless is good fun too – you actually do feel a bit more “at one” with the ride.

So all the bits are now finally in place – next stage is a re-spray, and adding diamond spokey dokeys.

frame: Schwinn Alloy Cruiser
front fork: Kona project 2
wheels: white Velocity rims 36H, System-ex hub back, Shimano disc brake hub front
seat: brookes, unknown alloy seat post
bars and stem: unknown
drivetrain: seguino messenger 44T, 165mm cranks, back cog unknown
pedals: unknown with clips

Fire in London, originally uploaded by qwghlm.

BREAKING, London 12:59 – the Warehouse behind the bus depot on Waterden Road, E9, is on fire. If you’ve looked east from central london, you can see the smoke rising. It’s just behind my house, in the Hackney Wick area, near to Stratford. There are lots of firetrucks there already. More at Sky News.

coracle regatta, hackney

July 16th, 2007 · No Comments · london

On Sunday, I was picking up a paper in my local newsagent when I saw a flyer for a coracle regatta, about 2 mins away from my house. My friend was coming over from SW London, so I thought it would be a nice taste of the arty, bohemian East End to go check it out.

So me and Hal donned our “struggling-artist-look” tops (no-one understands his work), and strolled over with a big caipirinha jug.

It was by the canal in Hackney, and was generally a jolly good show, with a BBQ, a very free have-a-go attitude. I fell in.

It was organised by a nice guy called Harry, who also built the coracles. What a dude.

We’re back again at Favela Chic for the Hungamunga recycled art party.

The idea is you bring scraps, cereal boxes, general junk, and we provide paints, glue and material for you to turn it into beautiful art. More details on the club myspace.

Live bands and DJs play too, and at some point, you dance.

Check out pictures from the last one on my flickr here.

middlesex filter beds, capital ring

May 21st, 2007 · No Comments · london

I thought I would take a moment to big up the Middlesex filter beds in NE London. Near Hackney Marshes/Clapton kind of way.

Because its made of regular shaped, stone walkways, with a big circle in the middle and iron pump switches at regular places on the edge of the circle, it looks like a video game level. Very mysterious and cool. The kind of game where you run around big stone levels, pressing switches to make stone blocks move and water flow. Which is in fact what those switches used to do when the filter beds were operational.

fliter beds - central round thing

I highly recommend checking them out if you’re in East London. There a big route you can follow called the Capital Ring – which is a walking/cycling route all the way around zone 3ish London – about 105 miles in all.

BBBBQ

I hereby declare the Inaugural Bicycle Booze BBQ to be a total success.

Picture 019
It’s a bicycle, with a full-on BBQ attached to it.

Last weekend we attached a BBQ to a bicycle, and a big tank of Pimms to another bicycle, and pedalled around East London, cooking and drinking.

Hal gets the hang of it.
