super egg omlette thing

It's an omlette, with a fried egg in the middle. While Heston does suprising combinations of different ingredients, me and housemate Stu investigated combining the exact same ingredients but prepared in different ways.

fold, pour in fried egg into hole, cook!

So, there are a couple of ways this could go - vertical: wildy different egg combinations like meringue + creme brule, coddling an egg inside a nest of scrambled egg etc, or horizontal: just seeing how many kinds of food you could stuff a fried egg into.

As an aside, I highly recommend this dish. It's tentatively named Vendetta Doble.

gerbils

Just a brief update - I have gerbils! They are very difficult to take pictures of, and currently enjoy shredding things, pointing at things, and eating.

nice tone

I think it's the question mark that really sets it off, and makes it slightly creepy.

google video blog now slightly annoying

So when you check the Google video blog there is loads of exciting stuff, but a lot of it now requires payment, or it says:

"We're sorry, but the provider of this video has not authorized Google to display this video in your location."

I find this quite distressing - it's the Internet, right? No boundaries etc? Also I miss the comments bit, like you find on YouTube, as there's often good info in the comments -e.g. what song is that? It's "Woman Friend" by Chromeo, etc

But there is still heaps of good stuff. Here is an octupus changing colours in slo-mo and reverse.

way home from work, then ASDA

I have a Sony Ericsson K750i 2MP cameraphone again, finally. This means I can bring you goodness even on my way home. New house is just next to Victoria Park. Sweet.

Go to work, walk home from the bus, go to Asda, try backflips in your room, blog, eat, wash, sleep. That's what life is I guess.

single speed bike conversion

Ever since I read that they were cool a couple of years ago, I have really wanted a single speed road bike. (NY cycle couriers have them). I had no idea why they were cool or better (low maintenance?!?), but I still wanted one. Yes, shallow.

So when my bike deraileur broke and I thought I would repair it as single speed, I found this how-to-convert-your bike-to-single-speed website:

"If you're riding for sheer pleasure... you may care more about the
actual experience of riding your bike [than the performance]. In this case, you may be a
candidate for a singlespeed bike.

Riding a singlespeed can help bring back the unfettered joy you
experienced riding your bike as a child. You don't realize how much
mental energy you devote to shifting until you relinquish your
derailers, and discover that a whole corner of your brain that was
formerly wondering when to shift is now free to enjoy your surroundings
and sensations."

a single speed back wheel. no gears.

What a nice thought. No wonder simple products like iPod shuffle do so well - it's a bit lame, but then the lack of choice frees your mind to just dig what you're doing. I am going to look for more opportunities to remove slightly unnecessary choices from my life.

re-consideration

I was showing someone round East London a little bit, and they wanted to go to "the cool retro vintage stores" around the Brick Lane/Commercial St area.

I kind of object to these on the grounds that they're like charity shops, but they negate the 2 most important benefits of charity shops:

a) they're expensive!
b) they only sell all the same stuff that everyone in Shoreditch wears all the time, so you never find the truly wacky gear that you get in a suburb/small town charity shop. So you don't get the that uniqueness/stand out factor that I'd want from charity shop gear.

Anyway the point is I found this nice jacket/jeans range in the Laden Galleries, a store that sells clothing from a range of independent designers (103 Brick Lane). It's exactly the kind of thing I'd want to make for myself if I had more talent and had been thinking too much about skulls. For some reason, because they're from a small independent label, I felt the price (jacket £50) was ok, and didn't get cross/indignant like I normally do about 'designer' clothes prices. Didn't buy though.
